A premium category using interlocked polyester and cellulose fibres. Non-woven wallpapers breathe better than vinyl, have excellent dimensional stability (they don't expand or contract with humidity changes, which means fewer bubbles and lifted seams), and are among the easiest to install and remove cleanly.
Best for: Bedrooms and living rooms where quality and longevity matter.
Three-dimensional wallpapers create tactile surface effects — brick textures, geometric relief, wave patterns, wood grain. They add genuine depth to a wall, transforming it from a flat painted surface into an architectural element. Available in foam-based embossed vinyl or rigid PVC panel format.
Best for: Feature walls in living rooms, TV wall backdrops, reception areas, hotel lobbies.
Natural fabric — linen, jute, sisal, grasscloth — bonded to a paper backing. These have a warmth and organic texture that no synthetic wallpaper can replicate. They are also the most delicate — not washable, not moisture-tolerant, and significantly more expensive.
Best for: Formal living rooms and bedrooms with air conditioning and controlled humidity.
Kolkata note: Fabric wallpapers are not recommended for rooms without air conditioning. Kolkata's monsoon humidity causes fabric-backed wallpapers to absorb moisture and can cause mould behind the paper. Stick to vinyl or non-woven in non-AC rooms — no exceptions.
Self-adhesive wallpaper that requires no paste, no professional application and comes off cleanly when you want to change. The trade-off: it does not look as good as properly pasted wallpaper and does not last as long. Surface texture and humidity can reduce adhesion over time.
Best for: Renters, temporary installations, children's rooms (designs change as they grow), small accent areas.
Large-format photographic or illustrated murals printed across multiple panels. A forest, a cityscape, an abstract wash of colour — murals completely transform a single wall and require no other decoration in the room. They need precise installation and exact panel alignment.

The humidity issue is real. North-facing rooms, rooms adjacent to bathrooms, and rooms with poor ventilation accumulate moisture during the monsoon. Wallpaper on an exterior wall facing the northeast — which gets wind-driven rain from the Bay of Bengal — is particularly vulnerable. Use a quality primer-sealant on the wall before application, choose vinyl or non-woven over paper-based wallpaper, and make sure the room has proper ventilation.
Surface preparation matters more than the wallpaper itself. The most common wallpaper failure in Kolkata is not the wallpaper — it's inadequate wall preparation. Damp walls, flaky plaster, uncured paint. A wall that is not dry, flat and primed correctly will cause any wallpaper to fail within a year. Professional installation that includes proper surface preparation is what separates wallpaper that looks good for a decade from wallpaper that peels by the second monsoon.
Kitchen and bathroom wallpaper. These are the most challenging rooms for wallpaper in Kolkata. In bathrooms, tiles are generally safer. In kitchens, vinyl wallpaper on walls away from the cooking area can work well with adequate ventilation, but I would not put it behind the stove.
Which rooms benefit most from wallpaper. Master bedrooms and living rooms with AC are the easiest wins. The climate is controlled, the traffic is lower than kitchens, and wallpaper in these rooms can look extraordinary for years.
