The mistakes are predictable: too many cushions in too many sizes on a sofa that can barely hold them, all in slightly different shades of the same colour that do not quite cohere. Or the opposite — one thin, limp cushion on a large sofa, sitting apologetically in the centre. Or the right cushions in the wrong covers, the fill lumpy and uneven, the whole thing deflating after two weeks of use.
Getting cushions right means understanding the fill, the cover, the sizing, and the placement. This guide covers all of it.
Sofa seat cushions take the most weight and the most use. They need a dense, resilient fill that holds its shape under repeated compression. High-resilience (HR) foam or a fibre-wrapped foam core is correct for seat cushions. Pure fibre or polyester fill compresses too quickly in a seating application — you end up sitting on a pancake within six months.
Best for: sofa seats, armchair cushions, any cushion that bears regular sitting weight.
Back cushions on sofas are the decorative and comfort layer. They do not take the full body weight of a seated person, so softer fills work here: microfiber, Dacron, or fibre-wrapped foam. They should feel plump when not in use and compress comfortably when you lean against them.
Cushions whose primary job is visual. Typically placed on sofas, armchairs, beds, or shelving. The fill matters less than the shape and cover for these, though a deflated accent cushion looks worse than none at all. Microfiber or good-quality polyester fibrefill is fine for purely decorative use.
Large, flat cushions for floor seating. This is a cultural reality in Kolkata homes — guests sit on the floor at gatherings, and most home furnishing guides written from outside the city ignore this entirely. Floor cushions need durable covers (floor-level use is harder on fabric), firm fills that do not pancake under weight, and covers that can be removed and washed.
Best for: living rooms that host gatherings, meditation spaces, children's play areas.
Cushions for balcony furniture, garden chairs and terrace seating. The fill and cover both need to handle outdoor conditions: quick-drying, UV-stable, mildew-resistant. Standard indoor cushions placed outside deteriorate quickly in Kolkata's monsoon. I have seen people ruin expensive cushions in a single wet season by not taking this seriously.
Cushions made to your exact size, shape, fill specification and fabric choice. Custom is the solution when you need to match an existing sofa colour precisely, when you need an unusual size or shape, or when you want a specific fabric combination not available off the shelf.

For sofa seat cushions in a Kolkata home, HR foam at 35–40 IFD with a Dacron wrap is the professional standard. It holds its shape, feels comfortable, and the Dacron wrap prevents the hard-brick feeling that bare foam can have.
Cover fabric depends on the cushion's use, the room, and Kolkata's climate.
Cotton is breathable, natural in feel, and machine-washable in most cases. It stains more easily than synthetics and is less durable. Good for decorative cushions in cooler months.
Linen has a casual, tactile texture that gets softer with washing. It is not stain-resistant. Works well in relaxed, informal interiors.
Velvet is high visual impact and comfortable to touch. It shows pull marks from pets or rough handling. Most velvet covers are not machine-washable. Reserve it for rooms where it will not take hard use.
Microfibre is synthetic, smooth, stain-resistant and machine-washable. More practical for daily use than velvet or linen, and significantly more durable. Not as visually interesting, but it lasts.
Outdoor fabric — solution-dyed polyester or acrylic — is UV-stable, mildew-resistant and quick-drying. Required for any cushion that will live on a balcony or terrace in Kolkata.
Washable weave: tightly woven polyester-cotton or polyester blends that resist staining and can be machine-washed. The practical choice for family homes.
Humidity and fill. In poorly ventilated rooms, cushion fill can absorb moisture over time. This is less of a problem with foam fills sealed inside a cover than with loose fibre fills. For rooms with poor ventilation, use foam fills with removable, washable covers rather than filled cushion inserts that cannot be aired out.
Outdoor cushions during monsoon. Bring outdoor cushions inside during heavy rain, or use cushions specifically rated for outdoor use with quick-drain construction. A standard indoor cushion left outside during Kolkata's monsoon is ruined within a week. This is not an exaggeration.
Pet households. Velvet is the worst choice if you have cats: the pile shows every scratch mark and traps pet hair. Tightly woven microfibre or leather covers are much easier to maintain.
Colour choices for Kolkata apartments. Deep colours — navy, hunter green, terracotta, charcoal — work particularly well against Kolkata's common off-white and cream walls. They also show dust less than pale colours in a city with significant ambient particulate.
Cushion quantity per sofa. A 3-seater sofa looks balanced with 3–5 cushions. More than 5 starts looking cluttered. Vary sizes (one large, some medium, one small) rather than using identical sizes — it looks more intentional.

3–5 cushions is the right range for a standard 3-seater. Mix sizes: one or two 55×55 cm cushions, two 45×45 cm, and possibly one small 35×35 cm or a long bolster. Avoid lining up identical cushions in a row.
HR foam core with a Dacron (polyester batting) wrap for seat cushions. The foam provides shape retention and support; the Dacron wrap gives a softer feel and better appearance. For back scatter cushions, microfiber or soft polyester fibrefill is adequate.

A cushion with solution-dyed acrylic or polyester outdoor fabric, quick-dry fill, and a removable, washable cover. Avoid standard indoor cushions outside — they absorb moisture and grow mildew quickly in Kolkata's monsoon.
Remove the cover and wash according to its fabric care label. Most washable covers are machine-washable at 30°C. Foam inserts cannot be machine-washed; spot-clean with a damp cloth if needed and air-dry completely before replacing the cover.
