The humidity, the intense summer heat, the long monsoon season — all of these affect which fabrics hold up and which ones sag, fade or grow mildew within a year. Sheer curtains are lightweight, translucent panels that let diffused light into the room while offering a degree of privacy. They work as the first layer in a layered window treatment and are fine on their own in rooms where you want maximum light without full exposure.
Best for: Living rooms, dining rooms, south-facing windows where you want soft light without glare.
Kolkata note: Sheer fabrics breathe well, which matters in the pre-monsoon heat. They do not block UV or heat. If your room gets direct afternoon sun, layer them with a heavier drape or a blind.
Blackout curtains use tightly woven or coated fabric to block 95–100% of incoming light. They also provide thermal insulation — keeping rooms cooler in summer and warmer in winter — and significantly reduce external noise.
Best for: Bedrooms, home theatres, babies' rooms, anyone who works night shifts and sleeps during the day.
Kolkata note: These are genuinely worth the investment here. A west-facing Kolkata bedroom without blackout curtains becomes a furnace between 3 PM and 6 PM from March through September. I've had customers who bought cheap sheers first and came back within one summer.
Eyelet curtains have metal rings punched directly into the fabric header. They hang in smooth, uniform folds and slide easily on a rod. The look is clean and modern, and they are among the easiest curtain styles to maintain.
Best for: Contemporary interiors, living rooms, bedrooms where you want an uncluttered aesthetic.
Roman blinds fold upward in neat horizontal pleats when raised. They occupy minimal space, sit close to the window, and work particularly well in smaller rooms where floor-length drapes would look overwhelming. Available in blackout, light-filtering and sheer fabric options.

These are the traditional tailored curtain styles with gathered headings that hang in structured folds. Pinch pleat is more formal; pencil pleat is softer. Both require professional stitching for the pleats to sit correctly, and they reward the effort with a refined, expensive look.

Silk and velvet look stunning, but they are not suited to rooms without air conditioning in Kolkata's climate. Polyester and linen-polyester blends hold up far better in high humidity and handle repeated washing without losing shape. If you're attached to velvet, put it in an AC bedroom and nowhere else.

Kolkata's climate is not gentle on soft furnishings.
Humidity and mildew. Rooms that face a courtyard or are poorly ventilated accumulate moisture. Avoid thick pile fabrics in these rooms. Polyester-blend and treated cotton fabrics resist mildew far better than natural fibres.
Direct sun and fading. Kolkata's sun bleaches fabrics quickly on south and west-facing windows. Ask specifically about UV-fade resistance when choosing fabric. Darker colours fade faster. Solution-dyed polyester holds colour the longest.
Dust. Chandni Market, much of central Kolkata — dust is a constant. Choose fabrics that shake clean or are machine-washable. Velvet and silk collect dust and are difficult to clean at home.
Monsoon condensation. In rooms where windows are kept slightly open during rain, curtains near the window can collect moisture. Water-resistant fabric or polyester lining on the window-facing side prevents staining and mildew.

Blackout curtains with a lining are the most practical choice. They block the early morning sun (Kolkata gets light before 5 AM in summer), insulate against heat, and reduce road noise. Choose a polyester-blend fabric for durability in the humidity.
Sheer curtains are translucent and let soft, diffused light through. Blackout curtains use coated or tightly woven fabric to block nearly all light. Many people use both layers — sheers for daytime privacy with natural light, blackout for night-time sleep.
