Practically, headboards protect the wall behind your bed from pillows, hair oil, and the inevitable marks that accumulate over years of daily use. In Kolkata's humid climate, a wall behind a bed without protection can develop moisture marks and paint damage relatively quickly.
Aesthetically, a headboard is the backdrop for the most visually prominent part of your bedroom. Everything else — the bedlinen, the side tables, the wall art — reads in relation to it. Get the headboard right and the room looks curated. Skip it entirely, and the bed looks unfinished regardless of what else you do.

The internal structure uses foam padding over an MDF or wooden frame. The quality of the foam and the tautness of the upholstery application determine how good it looks and how long it stays looking good.

A specific style of upholstered headboard where buttons are pulled through the fabric at regular intervals, creating diamond or square grid patterns with soft indentations. Button-tufting looks immediately luxurious and has been a design constant across periods because it genuinely works.

Velvet deserves its own mention because it is the most popular premium choice we get asked about. The pile catches light differently depending on the direction, creating a richness that flat fabrics cannot match. In Kolkata bedrooms where natural light comes in at lower angles in winter mornings, a velvet headboard looks extraordinary.
Kolkata note: Velvet in a bedroom without direct sunlight on the headboard will maintain its colour for years. Avoid positioning velvet headboards where afternoon sun hits them directly — fading is visible and irreversible.
Leather and high-grade PU leather (rexine) headboards are durable, easy to clean, and work well in contemporary and mid-century modern interiors. The look is cleaner and more structured than fabric. A padded leather headboard in a warm tan or deep chocolate works especially well in rooms with wooden floors or warm-toned walls.
Kolkata note: Genuine leather headboards do not become sticky in Kolkata's heat the way low-grade rexine does. If choosing rexine over genuine leather for budget reasons, use a grade of at least 1.2mm thickness with a fabric (not paper) backing.
Solid wood or veneered MDF headboards with carved, panelled or slatted designs. They add warmth and a grounded, traditional quality to a bedroom that upholstered headboards do not quite replicate. Teak, sheesham and sal wood are the most durable options and handle Kolkata's humidity well.
Best for: Traditional interiors, rooms with wooden furniture, bedrooms aiming for a warm natural aesthetic.
Flat upholstered panels mounted directly to the wall rather than attached to the bed frame. These are completely independent of the bed size — you can swap the mattress, change the bed frame, and keep the headboard in place. Popular in contemporary Kolkata apartments where the headboard also covers the wall behind the bed partially.
Best for: Contemporary apartments, rooms where you want to separate the headboard from the bed frame.

The headboard should be wider than your mattress — ideally 10–20 cm wider on each side. A headboard exactly the width of the mattress looks pinched. The height depends on ceiling height and room scale.

For height: standard headboards are 90–120 cm tall. In rooms with 9-ft or higher ceilings, a taller headboard (120–150 cm) proportioned properly reads better. In rooms with 8-ft ceilings, a standard height headboard is correct.
Wall protection. In Kolkata's older apartment buildings — particularly those built in the 1970s–1990s — walls are not always well-maintained behind the bed. A tall upholstered headboard covers this area and protects it from the combination of body heat, hair product transfer, and humidity that degrades paint and plaster over time.
Made-to-order is the smart choice. Kolkata bedrooms are not always standard dimensions. Many older flats have unusual proportions — narrow long rooms, low ceilings, windows positioned in odd places relative to the bed. A custom-made headboard sized to your exact wall and bed configuration always looks better than a standard size that is slightly wrong.
Humidity and fabric. In poorly ventilated bedrooms, fabric headboards that sit tight against the wall can accumulate moisture behind them. Allow 2–3 cm of air gap between a wall-mounted headboard and the wall, or use a sealed-back freestanding headboard. This is a genuine concern in Kolkata's older buildings, not something to dismiss.
